Opening a Bank Account: Why the Meldezettel Matters
By Inti Fernandez
Branch banks almost always require it, online banks usually don't. An overview of what you actually need.
The difference: branch bank or online bank
Whether you need a Meldezettel to open an account in Austria depends a lot on the bank:
- Traditional branch banks almost always require a current Meldezettel as proof of address.
- Online and direct banks usually verify your address directly via ID through a video-ident process — an Austrian Meldezettel is often not strictly necessary here, and in some cases it's even possible to open an account without an Austrian residence.
What else you'll need
- Valid photo ID (ID card or passport, not expired)
- A tax self-declaration (Common Reporting Standard) — usually to be submitted within 90 days of opening the account
Practical order
If you're planning to open an account at a branch bank, take care of the Meldezettel first — it's due within 3 days of moving in anyway, and it saves you a second trip to the bank. The complete order of steps around moving is in our moving checklist.
Note
Requirements vary by bank — if in doubt, ask your preferred bank directly which documents are required for your specific case.
