Ummeldung or Anmeldung — What's the Difference?

All three go through the same Meldezettel — the difference is only in what changes for you.

Official texts use three terms that often get mixed up. The form is always the same though — the Meldezettel:

Anmeldung (registration)

You're registering a residence in Austria for the first time — for example because you're moving to the country, or establishing your own residence for the first time.

Ummeldung (re-registration)

You already have a registered residence in Austria and are moving within the country — e.g. from one apartment to another, even within the same municipality. The old address is de-registered and the new one registered — usually in one step.

Abmeldung (de-registration)

You're giving up a residence without establishing a new one in Austria — for example because you're leaving the country.

Does the same deadline apply to all three?

Where is this recorded?

Every Anmeldung, Ummeldung and Abmeldung is recorded in the Central Residents' Register (ZMR) — the nationwide register of everyone registered in Austria.
